Dr. Leakey, my mentor, had been looking for somebody to study chimpanzees, as being the beings most like us. Flying, one day, in a small aircraft over the whole area above Gombe National Park, all the forests that had been there when I arrived in 1960 had gone. There was terrible environmental destruction: crops were clearly failing; you could look down and see. So the question came into my mind, you know, how can we even try to save these famous chimpanzees if the people are struggling to survive? The Jane Goodall Institute began in 1977; right from the beginning it was set up to insure the continuation of the research of Gombe, for conservation, especially of chimpanzees, and conservation education, for me, a passion, is our program for young people. Because what's the point of my struggling, to try and save chimpanzees, to save the rainforests, to educate people, if we're not raising new generations to look after it better than we've done. We have become who we are by using our brains. When man first started moving out of the forests where he began, he was faced with all kinds of very fierce and savage creatures with sharp claws and sharp teeth. And it was the brain that enabled him to survive at that time. Our brains seem to function really well when our backs are to the wall, and I think more and more people have realized: yeah, we really are in an environmentally ghastly and a socially terrible situation, and we had better do something about it. There is something truly appealing about an Eco Warrior. It means you care about the environment and you're prepared to go to almost any length to fight to save it because it is so important. It's the young people, the energy and the commitment and dedication and passion, and sometimes courage of young people who know the problems and are empowered to take action. The resilience of nature: I mean, around Gombe all the trees had gone -- all of them. But by working with the people, helping them to improve their lives, they on now letting the forests grow back, and you can fly over it now. This whole area that was bare - there are green trees 20-30 feet high. Rivers that we've completely polluted can be restored , I know, I've seen it. Animal species on the brink of extinction can be given another chance. It's very inspirational!
